DISPATCH #06

Good morning Crew! It’s Christmas week and that always seems to carry a little extra weight, but in a good way. The year behind us, the new one just over the horizon and a reminder to slow down and soak it all in. Let’s ease into the week and enjoy the season.

TODAY’S CATCH

Main Dish

The sands of Gulf Shores saw a heart-warming moment when a nearly 100-pound loggerhead sea turtle was gently returned to the Gulf after a long journey of healing. Beach volunteers and wildlife rescuers watched as she slipped back into the salty blue at West Beach, once again free from the fishing line and hooks that had once tangled her up. It was one of those scenes that makes you stop and tip your hat to Mother Nature’s stubbornness and our community’s care.

What makes her story especially wild isn’t just that she got rescued here, but that this wasn’t her first brush with trouble. About eight years ago, off the coast of the Canary Islands, she was found hopelessly tangled in a fishing net before being rehabilitated there and given a tracking chip. Somehow, this ocean wanderer made it thousands of miles across the Atlantic only to wash up again here, reminding us that the ocean’s highways are long and life can be both fragile and fierce.

After ending her beach detour and finding a rip current to carry her back into deeper water, volunteers said goodbye with a mix of awe and relief. It’s stories like this that reassure the folks who wake up early to patrol the shoreline or report an injured turtle: your effort matters, even across oceans and years. Bon voyage girl!

Small Bites

  • Yesterday marked the winter solstice — the shortest day of the year and the first official day of winter. From here on out, the light starts slowly tipping back in our favor. Around here, it doesn’t mean snowdrifts or frozen docks, but it does mean softer sunsets, cooler walks on the beach and that quiet feeling like the year is taking a deep breath before turning the page. It’s a good excuse to remind ourselves that brighter, longer days are already on the way. Winter is here

  • Orange Beach just unanimously gave the thumbs-up to a new A&R Hotel at the site of the former Romar Beach Baptist Church on Perdido Beach Blvd. The vacant church building will be turned into a sleek six-story, 100-room lodging spot right next to the Phoenix West II. Council members hashed out details like how overflow parking will work and made sure any potential noise from the rooftop bar stays mellow so neighbors can keep napping through summer breezes undisturbed. Coming soon

  • The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo has some very special new residents, two critically endangered American red wolves, who’ve just arrived as part of a nationwide conservation effort to help save the species. With fewer than 20 red wolves left in the wild, this is a pretty big deal, and the zoo is playing an important role through a breeding and research program aimed at keeping these guys around for future generations. Don’t expect them to be front-and-center at the zoo though. Red wolves like their privacy, much like locals avoiding the beach on a holiday weekend. Save the wolves
