DISPATCH #03

Good morning,

Our humble little Crew has now sailed past 1,200 members! That’s more people than Microsoft employed when it went public. Thank you so much for being a part of this growing community of folks who love our little slice of the Gulf Coast.

It’s the holidays and there’s a lot going on this week, from drone shows to pub crawls, so let’s dive right in!

TODAY’S CATCH

Main Dish

Two of our local towns are proving there’s more than one way to be charming on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Sometimes charm can mean soft sandy beaches and seafood dinners at sunset. Other times it’s roadside whimsy and old school heart showing strangers a slice of small town soul.

Orange Beach made World Atlas’s list of Alabama’s 8 most charming small towns thanks to its blend of sugar-white beaches, easygoing waterfront action and laid back coastal lifestyle. Whether you’re strolling a boardwalk, taking in live music or spotting dolphins on a boat tour, it’s got that perfect mix of sea, sand, seafood and small-town vibes.

Elberta also made the cut too but for totally different reasons. It’s the kind of place where roadside art, quirky local history and woodland oddities give the town serious personality. From the quirky Stonehenge sculpture known as “Bamahenge,” to dinosaur models hidden among pine trees and a heritage museum that paints a picture of simpler times, Elberta shows that charm can come from things other than beaches and boardwalks.

Small Bites

  • The Wharf is cranking up the holiday cheer this year with its 6th annual Santa Pub Crawl, and it’s basically an excuse for all of us to dress ridiculous and feel festive about it. On Saturday, Dec. 6th from 7–10 pm, you can wander from bar to bar in your finest Santa suit, elf get-up or that ugly sweater your aunt swears is “cute.” Expect plenty of holiday drink specials, good food, costume contests and a big raffle. It’s ten bucks to join in (or bring a new toy), and everything goes to Toys for Tots, which makes the night feel even warmer. A little fun, a little giving and a whole lot of holiday spirit. Cheers!

  • Orange Beach Animal Control has rolled out its 3rd annual Pet Angel Tree, a simple, feel-good way for locals to help shelter animals. The tree is set up in the lobby of the Orange Beach Police Department, where folks can grab a tag that lists needed items like food, toys, blankets or bedding. Buy what’s on the tag, drop it off and boom, you’ve turned a quick stop into a gesture that brings comfort to animals waiting for their forever homes. It’s a small move with a big heart. Help a pet in need.

  • The Graham Creek Nature Preserve's Annual Christmas Trail opens Dec 6th in Foley, and it’s basically a cozy little holiday walk through the woods. The boardwalk and trail are lined with twinkly lights, fun scenes from A Christmas Story and Charlie Brown, and a few surprise characters along the way (Snow Princesses early in the evening, Santa a little later). It’s five bucks to get in and kids under two are free, so go wander around, get some cute photos and soak up a little Christmas cheer without the crowds. Enjoy nature in lights.

IRON BOWL AFTERMATH

Here are the results from last week’s Iron Bowl poll:

Auburn or Alabama? Pick your side.
Alabama: 64%
Auburn: 21%
Neither: 15%

With the game behind us, it looks like 64% of you get bragging rights for the next year and 21% think the refs were blind. Regardless, we can all take a deep breath now and get back to normal. We’re still neighbors at the end of the day… and you’ll still see each other at Publix tomorrow.

DO YOU KNOW?

What local community began as a French fishing village in the late 1800s, with the name meaning “safe harbor”?

BEST LIGHTS? CAST YOUR VOTE

I’m putting together a community-powered guide to the best Christmas light displays around the area, and I’d love to include your favorites. Maybe it’s an entire street or neighborhood that goes all-in, or that one house that looks like Clark Griswold moved to Baldwin County.

Click below to drop your go-to spots in the short form. If we have enough entries, I’ll tally everything up in a festive guide next week.
