A tough storm rolled through and left its mark on one of the coast’s most watched spots. The bald eagle nest at Gulf State Park collapsed Sunday night after heavy wind and rain, sending the baby eaglets to the ground. Park staff were able to track them down the next morning (with a little help from their parents circling overhead), and both were found injured — dealing with fractures, dehydration, and other minor issues. The good news: after some initial care locally, the eaglets have been transferred to Auburn’s Raptor Center and are now stable and doing well. A difficult moment, but one that shows just how much care goes into looking after the wildlife that calls this place home. fly eagles fly

From the deep South to the frozen tundra, an Alabamian just made history way up north. Jessie Holmes claimed his second straight win at the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, pulling off the rare back-to-back victory in one of the toughest races on the planet. Holmes, who was born and raised in Alabama, once again powered through brutal conditions across Alaska to take the top spot, proving that a little Southern grit can go a long way — even on a 1,000-mile trail of snow and ice. After winning the race, he fed his dogs ribeye steaks following a short interview, and said, "Dogs first, man, dogs first. They deserve all the glory.” good dogs!
