DISPATCH #31

Good morning Crew,

Keep your umbrellas handy, it looks like it’s going to be a wet week on the coast. Whether you’re planning a beach walk or a grocery run, here’s what’s worth knowing along the Gulf this week. Let’s take a look.

TODAY’S CATCH

  • A change is coming to beachfront parking in Gulf Shores. Starting July 1, the city will replace its $15 flat-rate parking fee with an hourly system ranging from $2 to $4 per hour, depending on location and time of day. City officials say the goal is to free up more parking spaces by reducing long-term and overnight parking, while also making things a little fairer for folks who just want to stop by for a quick lunch, walk, or sunset view. For shorter visits, you may actually come out ahead. For all-day beach days, the parking app may become your new worst enemy. One other thing worth noting: parking fines are also getting a bit more attention, jumping from $25 to $75. parking shuffle

  • Foley is celebrating America’s 250th birthday in a way that should keep paying off long after the party ends. The city has officially reached its goal of planting 250 trees in 2026, adding new shade and greenery throughout public spaces, rights of way, and city properties. The effort is part of the nationwide America 250 celebration, which has also brought hundreds of American flags to town. Around here, planting a tree feels like a pretty fitting way to mark a milestone — something future generations can enjoy long after the fireworks are over. planting roots

  • Every summer, Orange Beach hosts one of the biggest spectacles on the Gulf. The Blue Marlin Grand Championship returns to The Wharf Marina July 14–19, bringing elite fishing teams from across the Gulf Coast to compete for serious prize money and Triple Crown bragging rights. But you don't need a boat to join the fun. The free public weigh-ins draw thousands of spectators who come to watch massive marlin, tuna, and wahoo roll up to the scales. It's one of those events that's part fishing tournament, part festival, and part "good grief, look at the size of that thing." reel big deal

BEACH OR BOAT?

Last week’s poll results have been tallied and it looks like most of you prefer to be looking at the water instead of being on the water. Beach day was the winner by a 3 to 1 margin!
